Art painting---Genesis. The Big Bang

Everyone wonders how the universe began. There are lots of theories out there. Not the least is one by Albert Einstein and his theory of the Big Bang. The Bible has another story. In Genesis it simply says that God spoke and he created. How`s that for technique.
Of course I wondered about it too. Being an artist I decided it would make for an interesting picture. I just closed my eyes and thought about the creation of the universe. I too wondered how it all began. I imagined that I was in the middle of nowhere. Somewhere out in space. All was blackness. Soon I saw a giant arm appear, robed in white, and it was holding a golden ball on a string.
As I watched, I heard a voice quietly speak. Then all of a sudden the golden ball trembled. I heard a deep rumbling sound. Things were now flying off and away from the golden ball, flying off in all directions at a furious speed. I imagined these things to be stars, suns, moons, planets. These objects were all of different colors and different sizes. Some were giant in size. Others were puny. All went whizzing off into the darkness. Millions of these objects, going everywhere.
The golden ball trembled all the while as these objects flew off from it. Millions of things spearing off in all directions.
I opened my eyes. Well, maybe that's the way it all happened. I then hauled out my paints and brushes and I went ahead and did it.

art painting--Omar Khadr
This painting is of Omar Khadr. He was recently convicted of killing an American soldier. He admitted to it. He is going to spend perhaps the next eight years in jail for this crime. For a short time there was talk of sentencing him to forty years in jail, but that quickly fell through. At the most, he will spend eight years behind bars.
I wanted to show his face not in the perhaps sweet and almost glorified manner that we have seen it recently in all the media. Instead I wanted to show his face in coldness and hardness. After all, he did kill someone. So, here he is. Omar Khadr.

art cartoon---prisoners
I was recently looking through a book of Gary Larson's "The far Side" cartoons. He does wonderfully wild and wacky stuff. I have to admit that it took a while for me to really get into his work, but now I find Gary is a gleeful inspiration. Looking at his cartoons gave me the idea for this cartoon about prisoners.

The Art of Surfing

I was watching a documentary on surfing.I was amazed how these guys would continually jump into the ocean with only a surf board and look for an approaching wave that hopefully would grow as tall as a building. After that they would "ride" this wave even as it circled overhead and threatened to crash down onto them.
With good timing and skill, the surfer would expertly ride out the wave. If his timing was off, then the wave would crash onto him and send him flying. The surfer would disappear from view. People on the beach would be nervous. They hoped that nothing was wrong. A few seconds later, the surfer would appear, with a slightly shaken look on his face. Then, he would beam a smile, to show that the wave had got him, but he was okay. After that, he would climb onto his surf board and search out another cresting wave,hopefully a giant one of course, and ride out that one too.
As I watched the documentary, I made a drawing of a surfer doing his stuff. When the program was over I then took the drawing and made it into a finished painting.

I like doing still life pictures. Nothing moves. I can take all the time needed to work out the composition. The 'model' doesn't complain that the room is too cold, or is tired and needs a break. Then again, I can stop anytime I need to if I happen to get tired or want to work out some changes in the picture. So, for those reasons, I like doing a still life picture.

He was born with the name Julius Henry Marx but we know him better as "Groucho" Marx. He was a consummate comedian who kept us laughing in such madcap movies as Monkey Business, Horse Feathers, Duck Soup and A Night at the Opera,among many other humorous classics In his later years, the laughs continued with his quiz show You Bet Your Life.
It was Groucho's quick wit, his funny chicken walk, thick eyebrows, bushy mustache, and his ever present cigar that made you laugh even when he wasn't saying anything. An example of his wit was seen in his quiz show You Bet Your Life where Groucho asked a contestant how many children she had. The lady said she had over a dozen. The answer amazed Groucho, and he asked her why she had so many children. She replied "I love my husband." Groucho replied "I love my cigar, but I take it out once in a while."
Another humorous incident occurred at an airport as he was going through customs. He was filling out a form and marked his less familiar name Julius Henry Marx. When the question of occupation came up, Groucho wrote "smuggler". Naturally this created quite a storm with the custom agents, but everything calmed down when the agents realized that in their midst was the great "Groucho" Marx.
Groucho's face is famous and well-known even today.You can find a caricature of his face if you walk into any joke shop, looking for a Halloween mask. There you will find rows of humorous looking Groucho Marx masks--with the trademark bushy eyebrows, thick mustache and black horn rimmed glasses staring back at you. Just a look at Groucho's face is enough to set you laughing.
If you need a good belly laugh, see any of his movies to set you chortling.

Art Painting--Sydney Opera House. Artist: Martin Plant©2009

I recently saw a picture of the Sydney Opera House and I wanted to show it in a different version from the one usually seen. I wanted to give the impression of "Music" and "Sound" and to do this I decided to use vibrant colors and high contrast instead of the mauve color of the opera house as we know it.
I began the drawing in the "eye-balling" technique. Artists know what I mean by this. It's a slow, laborious artist's method to draw something when you don't want to use rulers or other mechanical devices. And I don't. After about an hour of this I stopped for a break.When I returned, I made more "eye-balling" corrections until the drawing looked right.(And people think becoming an artist is just "ten easy lessons" Ha!) Then I added a sailboat to show that the Sydney Opera House was set on an island. After that came lots of decisions on which color combinations to use.
So here it is, The Sydney Opera House. Maestro, music please.

William Shakespeare. Playwright. ©Martin Plant
During Shakespeare's lifetime, he was a working playwright. Fortunately for him, his stuff was good and his work caught on early. His plays sold out to packed houses. But after a while, of course, ticket sales would dwindle. The solution was to write another play. This Shakespeare did, hoping his next play too would be popular with the public, and that it would continue to earn him a living. After all, he was a working stiff, like most of us.
What Shakespeare never realized was that his plays were not only popular, but that they would live on long after he was gone. He simply thought that his plays would be performed , run their course, and then be forgotten, as happened to many other playwrights. Instead, his work is being performed these five hundred years now. You can see his plays in the movies, on Broadway, at summer-stock, in colleges, at Shakespeare In The Park, and countless other venues. Not bad for a working stiff playwright.
